The article discusses pictures of Mathematical Science which seem to exist in the Polish society, in society of Polish scientists and inside of the society of Polish mathematicians. It is emphasized that applications of mathematics (including stochastics) do not receive enough attention and support. Some steps towards change of this situation are proposed.

Prof. Maksymilian Dryja, przewodniczący Komisji Zastosowań Matematyki Komitetu Matematyki PAN, zwrócił się do mnie z prośbą o napisanie posłowia do wystąpienia, które miałem dwa lata temu, w trakcie XXXIX Konferencji Zastosowań Matematyki, i które zostało opublikowane w Matematyce Stosowanej, t. 12/53, 2011, 55-58 (z pewnymi zmianami, niekoniecznie na lepsze).Przypomnę, że wystąpiłem wtedy z kilkoma tezami na temat pozycji zajmowanej przez  szeroko rozumiane zastosowania matematyki w nauce polskiej. Profesorowie Stefan Jackowski i Michał Karoński przygotowywali wówczas projekt wieloletniego, narodowego programu rozwoju matematyki, a moim zamiarem było nadanie odpowiedniej rangi  zagadnieniom związanym z zastosowaniami matematyki i statystyką. Ponadto, jako osoba obdarzona mandatem środowiska (pochodzący z wyboru członek Rady Nauki), uważałem za swój obowiązek zwrócenie uwagi Państwa na archaiczną strukturę nauk matematycznych w Polsce, strukturę,  która nie uwzględnia znaczenia zastosowań matematyki i statystyki w świecie współczesnym i nie sprzyja rozwojowi tych dziedzin jako dyscyplin ma-tematycznych.

Prof. Maksymilian Dryja, Chairman of the Commission of Applied Mathematics (CAM) of the Committee of Mathematics Polish Academy of Sciences (CM PAS), turned to me with a request to write the afterword to come, that I had two years ago, during the XXXIX Conference on Applied Mathematics, and which was published in Applied Mathematics, vol. 12/53, 2011, 55-58 (with some changes, not necessarily for the better).I recall that I performed with several theses on the positions occupied by the broad application of mathematics in Polish science then. Professors Stefan Jackowski and Michael Karoński preparing the draft multiannual national program for the development of mathematics, and my intention was to give the appropriate rank issues related to the application of mathematics and statistics. In addition, as a person endowed with the mandate of the academic world an elected member of the Council of Science), thought it his duty to draw the attention of Member States to the archaic structure of the mathematical sciences in Poland, a structure that does not take into account the importance of the application of mathematics and statistics in the modern world and not conducive to the development of these areas as mathematical disciplines.

Tomasz Franciszek Schreiber, a young Polish mathematician, passed away on December 1, 2010. Since 2009 he was a professor at the Department of Probability Theory and Stochastic Analysis at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the Nicolaus Copernicus University (NCU) in Toruń.
