The aim of the author was complex. First, he showed the importance of post-industrial buildings in contemporary cultural landscape of a city with medieval origin. The second aim was to define their role in shaping tourism space of such a city with a concentration of significant and valuable architecture. According to those guidelines, Toruń in Poland was selected for a detailed analysis. The value of the urban complex of the Old and New Town in Toruń was acknowledged by the UNESCO World Heritage List. The paper is based on a case study of the former municipal gasworks in Toruń, which has been converted into a planetarium. It is one of the earliest and most successful examples of functional transformation of post-industrial facility in Poland. The importance of the Planetarium has been consistently increasing in the tourism space of Toruń and currently it is one of the most popular tourist attractions of the city. Also the former municipal gasworks building has been permanently inscribed in the cultural landscape of the Old Town in Toruń, even though it has different origins than the urban surroundings.

Celem autora artykułu jest wskazanie roli obiektu poprzemysłowego we współczesnym krajobrazie kulturowym oraz w kształtowaniu przestrzeni turystycznej historycznego miasta o rodowodzie średniowiecznym i znacznym nagromadzeniu niezwykle cennych obiektów architektury. W tym celu do szczegółowej analizy wybrano Toruń. Wartość zespołu urbanistycznego Starego i Nowego Miasta w Toruniu jest potwierdzona obecnością na Liście Światowego Dziedzictwa Kulturowego i Przyrodniczego UNESCO. Praca powstała w oparciu o studium przypadku dawnego zbiornika gazowni miejskiej w Toruniu, który został zaadaptowany na planetarium. Jest to jeden z najwcześniejszych i najbardziej udanych przykładów przekształceń funkcjonalnych obiektu postindustrialnego w Polsce. Znaczenie Planetarium konsekwentnie wzrasta w przestrzeni turystycznej Torunia i aktualnie jest jedną z najchętniej odwiedzanych atrakcji turystycznych tego miasta. Również budynek, zajmowany przez placówkę, wpisał się na stałe w kulturowy krajobraz Starego Miasta w Toruniu, mimo odmiennej genezy w porównaniu z otaczającą go zabudową.

During the time of centrally controlled economy Polish cities were shaped by processes and structures typical of a socialist state. When changes in the economic, social and political system in Poland begun, Polish cities and towns entered a transformation process. The aim of the paper is to answer the question whether and to what extent spatial transformations of small towns in Poland show symptoms of gentrification. Authors analyse the problems of towns genesis, population changes, changes in the spatial and functional structures of towns as well as the modernization of the central districts of small towns in Małopolska Province. In view of present changes that take place in the structures of small towns in Europe and the widely undertaken actions towards the revitalization of small towns’ centres in Poland, the authors attempted to analyse spatial, economic and social transformations in the light of wider processes of gentrification, however at the present stage of development of small towns it is difficult to speak of gentrification processes itself.
