Critical socio-political changes that have happened in Europe during the last twenty years, particularly in East-Central Europe, have had a great influence on the development of cities and the surrounding areas. The state welfare structure of West European countries has influenced the socioeconomic development of their cities. On the other hand, the state–managed economy in East-Central Europe controlled the local communities, which had great impact on their undertakings. The changes in political structure and economic reform policies have in turn resulted in changes in social institutions and property relations. Nowadays, the socioeconomic growth of the cities has taken place essentially in the areas around the cities. Innovation is one of the most important factors of the enterprise development there. The author concentrates on the consequences of alternative forms of innovation in the tourist areas and uses Bruges and Dresden as case studies; he refers to economic restructuring and innovative efforts in Erfurt.

Urban games and other forms of field games, such as Questing, are innovative ideas for presentation, disclosure and interpretation of natural and cultural heritage. The results of the survey presented in the study show that soon urban games can become an alternative to a traditional guided sightseeing of an urban area. There may be several reasons for such a choice: an interesting way of exploring a city, aspects of play and physical activity, better memorization of information, as well as the possibility of being independent from guide’s preferences, self-activity and taking the paths other than the ones which are popular among tourists. A well-prepared urban game is a part of the particular trend in tourism based on entertainment, emotions, education and engagement (4×e). Players become active participants in the adventure directed by the organizers, however, they solve the tasks using their own ideas and variants of routes. In Poland, urban games are used mainly in cognitive and business tourism based on integration parties and team building activities. The current offer of urban games on the tourism market in our country is limited. Examples of this particular form of sightseeing have been observed mostly in the biggest Polish cities. By monitoring the availability of individual events, their constant changing and adjusting to customers’ preferences can be noticed. The growing number of urban games introduced in Poland is not followed by the increase in tourists’ awareness that it is possible to use this form of city sightseeing. The source of knowledge about urban games is mainly the information provided by other people, as well as the Internet.

Technological and economic transformation of the past few decades resulted in a significant re-evaluation of the factors affecting the location of economic activity. General trend in these changes is the declining importance of the so-called “hard factors”, “cost factors” (such as transport costs, labour costs and the amount of taxes), as opposed to the so-called “soft factors”; special emphasis among these factors is placed on human capital. An important aspect of the human factor in the process of innovative economy development, is the quality of life in the area. The high quality of life in a given place encourages people with high creative potential to live in this place. According to Richard Florida’s theories, people do not migrate to find work, but work follows people. Therefore, the so-called “good climate for people” is one of the most important factors for growth in the regions. Qualities, such as cultural heritage, clean air, high level of safety, and the atmosphere of openness and tolerance, are the factors that are increasingly important for the choice of residence. Moreover, there are also features of attractive tourist sites. According to the above statements, it seems that touristic regions in economically developed countries, in addition to large cities, are one of the more desirable places to live for creative people, which is a potential source of innovation for local and regional economies. Assuming that the abovementioned correlations exist, this paper attempts to assess the attractiveness of tourist regions of France. The size and the structure of accommodation was chosen as the indicator of tourist attractiveness.

Nowadays, tourism is a crucial sector of national economy, and for many countries and regions it is one of the goals of economic activity, at the same time being a means of social and economic revival. Therefore, in order to professionally present the tourist potential and offer, and to attract tourists, tourist products should be organized, promoted and introduced in a relevant way. It is necessary to bear in mind that tourism is a service sector, a sector in which different kinds of innovations are adapted very quickly. The aim of this article is to present the innovation in the accommodation industry and to show that historical objects in Poland are more and more often adapted into accommodation facilities, which undoubtedly influences the development of tourism in the region where these objects are used. I will draw the reader’s attention to the beneficial conditions and positive effects of running hotels in historical buildings, as well as the negative aspects and threats that stem from converting historical objects into hotels. I will show the outcome of surveys conducted on a group of 150 respondents that were to determine how many persons made use of such object sand that allowed getting acquainted with the respondents’ opinion about the conversion of historical objects into accommodation facilities. Finally, I will suggest a growth strategy for hotels which function in historical buildings.

Sea tourism brings huge profits to the Caribbean. The cruise market is set mainly for tourists coming from North America. Low travel costs, high income and the long-lasting tradition of sailing excursions are the main reasons. More and more European tourists can also be seen in the Caribbean thanks to numerous air connections. The cruise routes follow the most attractive ports. The ongoing competition causes the increase of quality of passenger’s service and goods. The investment of island countries in the development of tourist infrastructure in ports grows with every year. It results in creation of ports which serve mainly tourist ships. Despite the fact that most ports fulfil the basic functional criteria, only few occupy high positions in the world ranking of handling passenger and freight traffic. The competitiveness of ports is a complicated process and has many reasons. Base ports are studied in this paper, with a special stress put on Miami and Everglades. They are one of the most important base ports for Caribbean circular cruises. The factors influencing competitiveness of a port, its internal and external spatial and functional links are analyzed as well.

Although Poland has gone through a period of many various trials regarding the introduction of different changes in the educational system (involving everything from types of schools, through levels of teaching, changes in curricula for each school subject, syllabuses and textbooks, to the modification of teaching aims and content for each subject), very little, in fact, has been done to promote the necessary remodelling of work that would ensure the shaping of a truly modern teacher. The author of this article has been conducting research on the development of subject specific and didactic competence of geography teacher trainees for over ten years. Personal and interpersonal competencies of graduates of higher education significantly affect their chances on the labour market. A profile of the graduate should also help potential employers choose competent employees. Information provided in the profile of the graduate enables employers to check whether during the course of studies the potential employee developed the desired skills. The author of this paper believes that acquisition of the appropriate competences by geography students – candidates for teachers – constitutes the most important element of professional training of future teachers, including geography teachers. The subject of the research presented in this paper is the evaluation of professional competence in the field of the socioeconomic system of the contemporary world. Research in this area should successfully contribute to the optimization of the teacher-training process, including geography teacher-training, and to the development of an effective and efficient model of teacher-training and competence acquisition.
