The problem of changing and shrinking economic base of many small towns causes necessity of searching new paths of development for them. Central service functions existing in those towns previously are largely washed out to larger cities as a result of the present metropolisation processes. The opportunity for economic base or redevelopment of small towns should focus on manufacturing industry. The issue of the paper is to indicate the role of industry for the development of labour market in the space of the small towns, proving the positive impact has practical applications because of its ability to design and implement new development strategy objectives of these towns. The study area were Poland’s counties (poviats), in which the central city had less than 20,000 inhabitants.

The subject of this paper is the issue of urban sprawling in the Kraków Metropolitan Area (Poland). Particular attention is paid on the changing role of industry as one of the key elements of development and metropolization of cities in post-socialist, emerging economies. The role of the industry in terms of activation of labor resources has been diminishing, which is connected to the automation of manufacturing processes and relocations of labor-intensive activities to regions with lower production costs. However, the industry, particularly hightech manufacturing, plays a significant role in stimulating research and development sector and generate innovations as a key component of the knowledge-based economy. The innovative industrial companies are one of the most important elements of the structure of metropolitan cities. The analysis of this process is based on data on employment and the operation of selected industrial companies, with particular emphasis on their shift from the city to the suburbs. The process of decentralization of high-order producer services, cultural services as well as advanced informational services is one of the most important features of modern urban areas and has been identified by many researchers.

Economics of Upper Silesian conurbation and Łódź region were deeply changed by Poland’s economic reform. Employment in industry decrease at the expense of services sector. Traditional sectors of industry were limited or completely reduced. Mining and steelworks sectors were touched by this process In Upper Silesian region while in Łódź it was textile sector. Contemporary metropolization is causing further changes, also in landscape. In cities of Upper Silesian conurbation old mining areas has been changed into modern cultural, services and recreation areas. Old textile factories in Łódź are getting new functions during revitalization. Industrial traditions as a part of local heritage became crucial for growth of postindustrial tourism.

W konurbacji górnośląskiej oraz w Łodzi w wyniku transformacji gospodarczej zaszły diametralne zmiany gospodarcze. Uwidaczniają się one w strukturze zatrudnienia oraz w strukturze produkcji. Wzrosło zatrudnienie w usługach, a zmalało w przemyśle. Tradycyjne działy przemysłu uległy znaczącemu ograniczeniu lub zanikły. W miastach konurbacji górnośląskiej dotyczy to przede wszystkim górnictwa węgla kamiennego i hutnictwa, a w Łodzi – włókiennictwa. Dalsze zmiany, również krajobrazowe zachodzą w efekcie metropolizacji i rozwoju funkcji metropolitalnych. W miastach Metropolii Śląsko-Zagłębiowskiej, na terenach pokopalnianych powstały nowoczesne kompleksy usługowe, kulturalne oraz rekreacyjne. W Łodzi część dawnych fabryk włókienniczych również dostosowano do nowych funkcji. Dawne tradycje przemysłowe stały się elementem dziedzictwa kulturowego i przyczyniły się do rozwoju turystyki postindustrialnej.
