Recognising and understanding the difficulties, which students show at different levels of teaching mathematics, can result in increased effectiveness of teaching. In this article, difficulties of students from the second to the fifth grade of primary school are analysed, revealed while they were solving tasks regarding differential comparison. Those difficulties, seemingly related to a relatively easy subject, make one realise how complex the process of learning mathematics is. The problem of differential comparison is only an example aimed at illustrating what impact previous experiences of a student have on the formation of pieces of their new knowledge.

In my paper, I discuss the results of individual observations of pupils aged 13-14. These children undertook an attempt to solve problems which were designed in order to bring about an inductive type of generalizing. The main aim of the study was to classify typical methods of proceeding, which represent the pupils’ ways of reasoning and to determine what influence a particular method of proceeding may have on the final outcome of their work. These results indicate the general pupils’ strategies of generalizing. Presumably, visual thinking produces a positive effect on the pupils’ process of generalizing and abilities to describe regularity with the aid of a letter symbol.

The Portrait of Professor Helena Siwek (edited by Lidia Zaręba)Publilcations by Professor Helena Siwek (edited by Janina Wiercioch)The year 2010 marks the 70-th anniversary of birthday of Professor Helena Siwek, a Polish Mathematics Education specialist who significantly contributed to the creation and promotion of this area of knowledge in Poland and abroad. As a student of professor Anna Zofia Krygowska, she has been continuing the work initiated by Krygowska through a substantial contribution to the development of the "Krakow School of Mathematics Education". A wide range of her research interests covers such fields as logic teaching, the recognition and development of mathematical abilities of children with a mild retardation, in particular the Action-based Mathematics Teaching, a concept created by A. Z. Krygowska. A considerable part of professor Helena Siwek's activity is connected with the reform of mathematical education in Poland.

In the training process of students – future teachers of mathematics, an important role is played by, among others, participation in the diploma seminar, during which the student (being at the final stage of studies)is tasked with preparing a bachelor’s or master’s thesis. This dissertation may be purely mathematical in nature or refer to problems in didactics of mathematics. The article aims to develop and illustrate some thoughts from previous works of the authors (Zaręba, 2009; Major, Olik-Pawlik, Ratusiński, Zaręba, 2016), pointing to the legitimacy of the preparation of teacher diploma theses in the field of didactics of mathematics by students.
