Evolution of convex entire graphs by curvature flows

100%
EN
We consider the evolution of an entire convex graph in euclidean space with speed given by a symmetric function of the principal curvatures. Under suitable assumptions on the speed and on the initial data, we prove that the solution exists for all times and it remains a graph. In addition, after appropriate rescaling, it converges to a homothetically expanding solution of the flow. In this way, we extend to a class of nonlinear speeds the well known results of Ecker and Huisken for the mean curvature flow.

Deforming metrics of foliations

Let M be a Riemannian manifold equipped with two complementary orthogonal distributions D and D ⊥. We introduce the conformal flow of the metric restricted to D with the speed proportional to the divergence of the mean curvature vector H, and study the question: When the metrics converge to one for which D enjoys a given geometric property, e.g., is harmonic, or totally geodesic? Our main observation is that this flow is equivalent to the heat flow of the 1-form dual to H, provided the initial 1-form is D ⊥-closed. Assuming that D ⊥ is integrable with compact and orientable leaves, we use known long-time existence results for the heat flow to show that our flow has a solution converging to a metric for which H = 0; actually, under some topological assumptions we can prescribe the mean curvature H.

In this paper we study heat kernels associated with a Carnot group G, endowed with a family of collapsing left-invariant Riemannian metrics σε which converge in the Gromov- Hausdorff sense to a sub-Riemannian structure on G as ε→ 0. The main new contribution are Gaussian-type bounds on the heat kernel for the σε metrics which are stable as ε→0 and extend the previous time-independent estimates in [16]. As an application we study well posedness of the total variation flow of graph surfaces over a bounded domain in a step two Carnot group (G; σε ). We establish interior and boundary gradient estimates, and develop a Schauder theory which are stable as ε → 0. As a consequence we obtain long time existence of smooth solutions of the sub-Riemannian flow (ε = 0), which in turn yield sub-Riemannian minimal surfaces as t → ∞.

In this survey we discuss the evolution by inverse mean curvature flow of star-shaped mean convex hypersurfaces in non-compact rank one symmetric spaces. We show similarities and differences between the case considered, with particular attention to how the geometry of the ambient manifolds influences the behaviour of the evolution. Moreover we try, when possible, to give an unified approach to the results present in literature.

A convergence result for the Gradient Flow of ∫ |A|2in Riemannian Manifolds

62%
EN
We study the gradient flow of the L2−norm of the second fundamental form for smooth immersions of two-dimensional surfaces into compact Riemannian manifolds. By analogy with the results obtained in [10] and [11] for the Willmore flow, we prove lifespan estimates in terms of the L2−concentration of the second fundamental form of the initial data and we show the existence of blowup limits. Under special condition both on the initial data and on the target manifold, we prove a long time existence result for the flow and the subconvergence to a critical immersion.

Gradient estimates for inverse curvature flows in hyperbolic space

62%
EN
We prove gradient estimates for hypersurfaces in the hyperbolic space Hn+1, expanding by negative powers of a certain class of homogeneous curvature functions F. We obtain optimal gradient estimates for hypersurfaces evolving by certain powers p > 1 of F-1 and smooth convergence of the properly rescaled hypersurfaces. In particular, the full convergence result holds for the inverse Gauss curvature flow of surfaces without any further pinching condition besides convexity of the initial hypersurface.

An almost pluriclosed flow

62%
EN
We define two parabolic flows on almost complex manifolds, which coincide with the pluriclosed flow and the Hermitian curvature flow respectively on complex manifolds. We study the relationship between these parabolic evolution equations on compact almost Hermitian manifolds.
