The famous theorem of Belyi states that the compact Riemann surface X can be defined over the number field if and only if X can be uniformized by a finite index subgroup Γ of a Fuchsian triangle group Λ. As a result such surfaces are now called Belyi surfaces. The groups PSL(2,q),q=p n are known to act as the groups of automorphisms on such surfaces. Certain aspects of such actions have been extensively studied in the literature. In this paper, we deal with symmetries. Singerman showed, using acertain result of Macbeath, that such surfaces admit a symmetry which we shall call in this paper the Macbeath-Singerman symmetry. A classical theorem by Harnack states that the set of fixed points of a symmetry of a Riemann surface X of genus g consists of k disjoint Jordan curves called ovals for some k ranging between 0 and g+1. In this paper we show that given an odd prime p, a Macbetah-Singerman symmetry of Belyi surface with PSL(2,p) as a group of automorphisms has at most

On pq-hyperelliptic Riemann surfaces

100%
EN
A compact Riemann surface X of genus g > 1 is said to be p-hyperelliptic if X admits a conformal involution ϱ, called a p-hyperelliptic involution, for which X/ϱ is an orbifold of genus p. If in addition X admits a q-hypereliptic involution then we say that X is pq-hyperelliptic. We give a necessary and sufficient condition on p,q and g for existence of a pq-hyperelliptic Riemann surface of genus g. Moreover we give some conditions under which p- and q-hyperelliptic involutions of a pq-hyperelliptic Riemann surface commute or are unique.

Theory of coverings in the study of Riemann surfaces

100%
EN
For a G-covering Y → Y/G = X induced by a properly discontinuous action of a group G on a topological space Y, there is a natural action of π(X,x) on the set F of points in Y with nontrivial stabilizers in G. We study the covering of X obtained from the universal covering of X and the left action of π(X,x) on F. We find a formula for the number of fixed points of an element g ∈ G which is a generalization of Macbeath's formula applied to an automorphism of a Riemann surface. We give a new method for determining subgroups of a given Fuchsian group.
