We obtain finiteness theorems for algebraic cycles of small codimension on quadric fibrations over curves over perfect fields. For example, if k is finitely generated over ℚ and X → C is a quadric fibration of odd relative dimension at least 11, then CH i(X) is finitely generated for i ≤ 4.

We prove certain results comparing rationality of algebraic cycles over the function field of a quadric and over the base field. These results have already been obtained by Alexander Vishik in the case of characteristic 0, which allowed him to work with algebraic cobordism theory. Our proofs use the modulo 2 Steenrod operations in the Chow theory and work in any characteristic ≠ 2.

We prove certain weak versions of some celebrated results due to Alexander Vishik comparing rationality of algebraic cycles over the function field of a quadric and over the base field. The original proofs use Vishik’s symmetric operations in the algebraic cobordism theory and work only in characteristic 0. Our proofs use the modulo 2 Steenrod operations in the Chow theory and work in any characteristic ≠ 2. Our weak versions are still sufficient for existing applications. In particular, Vishik’s construction of fields of u-invariant 2r + 1, for r ≥ 3, is extended to arbitrary characteristic ≠ 2.

Transcendence degree of zero-cycles and the structure of Chow motives

100%
EN
In the paper we introduce a transcendence degree of a zero-cycle on a smooth projective variety X and relate it to the structure of the motive of X. In particular, we show that in order to prove Bloch’s conjecture for a smooth projective complex surface X of general type with p g = 0 it suffices to prove that one single point of a transcendence degree 2 in X(ℂ), over the minimal subfield of definition k ⊂ ℂ of X, is rationally equivalent to another single point of a transcendence degree zero over k. This can be of particular interest in the context of Bloch’s conjecture for those surfaces which admit a concrete presentation, such as Mumford’s fake surface, see [Mumford D., An algebraic surface with K ample, (K 2) = 9, p g = q = 0, Amer. J. Math., 1979, 101(1), 233–244].

Lagrangian 4-planes in holomorphic symplectic varieties of K3[4]-type

EN
We classify the cohomology classes of Lagrangian 4-planes ℙ4 in a smooth manifold X deformation equivalent to a Hilbert scheme of four points on a K3 surface, up to the monodromy action. Classically, the Mori cone of effective curves on a K3 surface S is generated by nonnegative classes C, for which (C, C) ≥ 0, and nodal classes C, for which (C, C) = −2; Hassett and Tschinkel conjecture that the Mori cone of a holomorphic symplectic variety X is similarly controlled by “nodal” classes C such that (C, C) = −γ, for (·,·) now the Beauville-Bogomolov form, where γ classifies the geometry of the extremal contraction associated to C. In particular, they conjecture that for X deformation equivalent to a Hilbert scheme of n points on a K3 surface, the class C = ℓ of a line in a smooth Lagrangian n-plane ℙn must satisfy (ℓ,ℓ) = −(n + 3)/2. We prove the conjecture for n = 4 by computing the ring of monodromy invariants on X, and showing there is a unique monodromy orbit of Lagrangian 4-planes.

For the Grothendieck group of a split simple linear algebraic group, the twisted γ-filtration provides a useful tool for constructing torsion elements in -rings of twisted flag varieties. In this paper, we construct a non-trivial torsion element in the γ-ring of a complete flag variety twisted by means of a PGO-torsor. This generalizes the construction in the HSpin case previously obtained by Zainoulline.

Seshadri positive submanifolds of polarized manifolds

EN
Let Y be a submanifold of dimension y of a polarized complex manifold (X, A) of dimension k ≥ 2, with 1 ≤ y ≤ k−1. We define and study two positivity conditions on Y in (X, A), called Seshadri A-bigness and (a stronger one) Seshadri A-ampleness. In this way we get a natural generalization of the theory initiated by Paoletti in [Paoletti R., Seshadri positive curves in a smooth projective 3-fold, Atti Accad. Naz. Lincei Cl. Sci. Fis. Mat. Natur. Rend. Lincei (9) Mat. Appl., 1996, 6(4), 259–274] (which corresponds to the case (k, y) = (3, 1)) and subsequently generalized and completed in [Bădescu L., Beltrametti M.C., Francia P., Positive curves in polarized manifolds, Manuscripta Math, 1997, 92(3), 369–388] (regarding curves in a polarized manifold of arbitrary dimension). The theory presented here, which is new even if y = k − 1, is motivated by a reasonably large area of examples.
